Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM) is a collective of forward thinking musicians rooted in and inspired by Indian classical music. Hailed as “Leaders of the Raga Renaissance” by the New Yorker, BRM creates original composed music by BRM member musicians and represented ensembles, and presents over 70 concerts annually at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, MOMA, The Met, India Center Foundation, Brooklyn Arts Museum, Celebrate Brooklyn, BRIC, Jazz Gallery, Pioneer Works, Joe’s Pub, Shapeshifter, The Rubin Museum, Yerba Buena Gardens, Seattle Town Hall, and more. BRM features both traditional Indian classical performances as well as cross-cultural Raga inspired music. The culturally inclusive nature of BRM has made it into an incubator of new music collaborations with sounds indigenous to Brooklyn.
7:00pm – GUIDED LISTENING: North Indian Classical 101 with Samarth Nagarkar
How does one listen to Indian classical music? Singer, educator, author and composer, Samarth Nagarkar will provide a guided listening experience and teach the basics of raga and tala. Learn to count the complex rhythm cycles and gain insight into the mood of the ragas. Novice and experienced listeners alike will gain a new appreciation for this rich art form as we decipher the fundamental components of North Indian classical music.
Samarth Nagarkar is a Hindustani classical vocalist, known for his captivating performances and richly traditional music. A performer, composer, teacher and author, Samarth is described by critics as one of today’s most prolific performers and a torchbearer of the traditions he represents. Samarth is a recipient of the President’s Award for winning the All India Radio’s National Music Competition and a Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and has performed in many of the great festivals around the world.
He was formerly head of the K. K. Kapoor Sangeet Research Academy in Lucknow and currently teaches at two prominent music schools in New York.
Samarth is also the author of “Raga Sangeet: Understanding Hindustani Classical Vocal Music.” This short book takes one through a musical journey of a lifetime. From mastering a single note to the complexities of raga exposition and emotional expression, from the basic musical perception of time to masterful and intricate rhythmic play, it explores a student’s journey through learning, assimilation and an ultimate alchemic transformation into an artiste. For connoisseurs as well as newly initiated musicians it unravels the deepest mysteries and lays out innermost concepts of the great art form that is Indian classical vocal music for all to appreciate and partake of.

Join us for two incredible, classical sets featuring Sanatan Goswami on Swartarang and Harmonium, followed by Abir Hussain on Sarod.
SANATAN GOSWAMI is one of the most outstanding harmonium players of his generation. Goswami has studied both voice and harmoium under some great masters of the craft, including: Pt. Dinanath Mishra (voice) and Pt. Maharaj Banerjee (Harmonium). In addition to his robust solo career as a harmonium player, Goswami has accompanied other renowned musicians. He has performed in almost all major music conferences across India, as well as others in the US, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. He is also regular artiste of A.I.R and T.V.
ABIR HUSSAIN (Sarod) is fast becoming a force to reckon with in the Hindustani classical concert circle. Hussain was initiated into learning the instrument by Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, a stalwart of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana. Now in his 30s, Hussain is a member of the Hindustani instrumental music faculty at ITC Sangeet Research Academy.
