Join KGB for Double Melancholy / Queer Words, where we will celebrate queer writers, words, and stories with Brooklyn and Canadian authors readings from their latest work. Featuring Cristina Pitter, Jess Barbagallo, Tanya Marquardt and Lambda-shortlisted author C.E. Gatchalian, whose new memoir Double Melancholy: The Making of a Brown Queer Man was recently published by Arsenal Pulp Press in April 2019.

Double Melancholy / Queer Words is grateful to be presented on Manahatta, in Lenapehoking, the homeland of the Lenape People. We pay respect to Lenape peoples, past, present, and future and their continuing presence in the homeland and throughout the Lenape diaspora. Our words are an offer of care and gratitude to the land, water and air of Lenapehoking.

CRISTINA PITTER
Cristina Pitter is a queer fat babe interdisciplinary artist, sex educator, activist, and founder of The Ashè Collective, a group which focuses on storytelling inspired by ancestral roots and identities while also engaging in community outreach. She also has the best laugh ever. SERIOUSLY. You might have seen her work at The Metropolitan Opera, Ensemble Studio Theatre, 59E59, Ars Nova, Classic Stage, New Ohio Theatre, Vital Joint, Joe’s Pub, The PIT, The Tank, The Flea Theater, JACK, Dixon Place, or three separate but specific bathtubs. JESS BARBAGALLO
Jess Barbagallo is an actor, arts writer, theater practitioner, playwright and teacher. Most recently appearing on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Jess has been acting professionally for almost fifteen years in New York City. In 2017, he traveled Europe with Tania Bruguera’s production of Endgame, and has toured internationally and domestically with experimental theatre companies Half Straddle (founding member), Big Dance Theater, Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf, and The Builders Association. Jess has performed in large-scale performance works by multidisciplinary artist Andrea Geyer: Time Tenderness at the Whitney Museum of Art and Comrades of Time at the Whitney and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Jess’s writing has been published in Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB Magazine and by 53rd State Press, where Jess also functions as a copyeditor and consultant. He has presented plays and performance texts at Dixon Place, The Brick, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Performance Space New York, and The New Ohio Theatre.

TANYA MARQUARDT
Tanya Marquardt is a writer and performer, whose first book Stray: Memoirs of a Runaway (Little A) was named a 2018 Best Queer History & Bio in The Advocate. Her play Transmission was published in the Canadian Theatre Review and Some Must Watch While Some Must Sleep, Tanya’s play about being a sleep talker, was the subject of NPR Invisibila podcast. She has performed with Theatre Conspiracy, Mallory Catlett, Mabou Mines, the Leaky Heaven Circus, Jerome Bel, and radix theatre, and has presented her work at the Brooklyn Museum, BAX, Dixon Place, Mabou Mines, the Collapsable Hole, The Tank, and in Canada at SummerWorks, Dancing on the Edge, PuSh Festival, and the Vancouver International Dance Festival. She received her BFA in Theatre at Simon Fraser University, a Certificate of Dance at MainDance, and an MFA in Creative NonFiction at Hunter College. Tanya lives and writes in Lenapehoking (Brooklyn, NY) and on the unseeded land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Səl̓ílwətaʔ, and Skwxwú7mesh Nations (Vancouver, BC). C. E. GATCHALIAN
Born, raised and based on the unceded, unsurrendered territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish and Tseul-Waututh (Vancouver, BC), C. E. Gatchalian is the son of mixed-race settlers from Imus, Cavite, Philippines and a queer- and Filipinx-identified author, editor, theatre-maker and producer. A graduate of UBC’s Creative Writing program, his plays, which include Broken, Claire, Crossing, Motifs & Repetitions, People Like Vince and Falling In Time, have appeared on stages nationally and internationally. He has been Playwright-in-Residence at the Firehall Arts Centre and the Vancouver Playhouse, Writer-in-Residence at Berton House and Historic Joy Kogawa House, and Artist-in-Residence at UBC’s Faculty of Education. In 2013 he received the prestigious Dayne Ogilvie Prize, awarded annually by The Writers’ Trust of Canada to an outstanding emerging LGBTQI+ writer. Formerly Artistic Producer of the frank theatre company (2011-2017), he is the recipient of two Jessie Richardson Awards for his work as a theatre artist and producer, and a three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist for his literary output.
