Double Take 26 | A Reading Series

Organized by Albert Mobilio, Double Take is a unique reading series that asks award winning and emerging poets, novelists, editors, and artists to trade takes on shared experiences. In this instance: laughter.

Since 2012 literary luminaries such as J.C. Hallman and James Marcus; Rick Moody and Tim Davis; and Elizabeth Willis and Charles Bernstein have teamed up in the creation of original works for the Double Take series. As a result, apexart audiences experience a one-of-a-kind evening of stories and reflections.

Edwin Frank is the author of Snake Train: Poems 1984-2013 and the editorial director of New York Review Books. He lives in Brooklyn and Amenia, NY.

Joseph Salvatore is the author of the story collection To Assume A Pleasing Shape, and co-author of the college textbook Understanding English Grammar. He is Books Editor at The Brooklyn Rail and a frequent contributor to The New York Times Book Review. His work has appeared in The Collagist, Epiphany, New York Tyrant, Open City, Post Road, Salt Hill, Sleeping Fish, Willow Springs, Rain Taxi, Routledge’s International Encyclopedia of Queer Culture, Angels of the Americlypse: An Anthology of New Latin@ Writing, and The Believer Logger. He’s an associate professor at The New School, and founding editor of the literary journal LIT.

Emily Skillings is the author of the poetry collection Fort Not (The Song Cave, 2017), which Publishers Weekly called a “fabulously eccentric, hypnotic, and hypervigilant debut,” as well as two chapbooks, Backchannel (Poor Claudia) and Linnaeus: The 26 Sexual Practices of Plants (No, Dear/ Small Anchor Press). Recent poems can be found in Poetry, Harper’s, Boston Review, Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, Hyperallergic, LitHub, and jubilat. Skillings is a member of the Belladonna* Collaborative, a feminist poetry collective, small press, and event series. She received her MFA from Columbia University, where she was a Creative Writing Teaching Fellow in 2017, and has taught creative writing at Yale University, Parsons School of Design, Poets House, and through Brooklyn Poets.

Perry Yung is an actor and musician from Oakland, California. He has been a member of La Mama E.T.C.’s Great Jones Repertory Company for over 20 years and was co-founder of the SLANT Performance Group which created the Off Off Broadway hit Big Dicks, Asian Men. SLANT received a New York Foundation for the Arts grant and a Joseph Papp/Public Theater Playwrights Development Commission. On television, Perry is best known as Ping Wu in Stephen Soderberg’s The Knick and is a cast regular of the Cinemax series WARRIOR. If you look hard, he’s often the Asian bad guy on TV. In 2002, Perry received the Japan/US Friendship Commission Arts Fellowship enabling him to travel throughout Japan to study the shakuhachi zen flute.

Albert Mobilio is the recipient of a Whiting Award, a MacDowell Fellowship, and an Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. His work has appeared in Harper’s, Hambone, Black Clock, BOMB, Cabinet, Open City, Paris Review Daily, and Tin House. Books of poetry include Bendable Siege, The Geographics, Me with Animal Towering, and Touch Wood. A book of fiction, Games and Stunts, has just been published by Black Square Editions. He is an assistant professor of literary studies at the New School’s Eugene Lang College, an editor at Hyperallergic Weekend, and a frequent contributor to Bookforum.
