o_write_my_nameThe next Literature lecture, as part of the Labor, Literature and Landmarks 2015 Lecture Series, will feature the Eakins Press Foundation, as part of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York’s ongoing showcase of independent presses in New York City.

The Eakins Press Foundation is a not-for-profit educational publisher that for the last 50 years has been dedicated to the advancement of literature and art through excellence of presentation. ‘O, Write My Name’ presents compelling portraits of 50 extraordinary individuals who contributed to making the Harlem Renaissance one of the great cultural movements in American history. Some of the subjects are familiaricons of music, dance, theater, literature, art, academia and sportswhile others are considerably less well known, but equally important to the spirit at the heart of the movement. Featuring photographs by Carl Van Vechten and an introduction by Darryl Pinckney.

The Eakins Press Foundation program supports and encourages the craftsmanship and art of authors, artists, painters and photographers, both unknown and of established reputation, whose efforts forward, or are relevant, to the vision, integrity and teaching of Thomas Eakins, the American painter for whom the Foundation is named.  In addition to his work with Eakins Press, Peter Kayafas is also a photographer, curator and teacher.  His photographs have been widely exhibited, and are in the collections of numerous museums and private collections.
