NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies and Deutsches Haus at NYU and present “European Security in a Multi-Polar World,” a conversation among Esther Ademmer (Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Kiel), Hadas Aron (faculty fellow at the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at NYU), and Gerald Schneider (Professor of International Politics and Executive Editor of “European Union Politics” at the University of Konstanz), which will be moderated by Christian Martin (Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at NYU).
About the panel:
With the imminent withdrawal of the United States from the INF treaty that restricts deployment of land-based medium-range missiles, Russian annexation of Crimea, the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine, and an overall decline in support for multilateral systems of collective security, Europe finds itself in a situation that is arguably less stable than anything the continent has experienced in the last 70 years. How will the continent, its people, politicians and institutions, react to the challenges presented by this new multi-polarity? Will Europe be able to be a pole in a multi-polar world or will it fracture under the pressure of increasing competition between Russia, China and the US? Will the values that the European Union claims as the core of its integration process inform its policies or will they give way to a more interest-based foreign policy stance?
