Facing the Wall

Author Michael Göring will read from and discuss his new novel Vor der Wand [Facing the Wall] with Martin Rauchbauer, Director of Deutsches Haus.

“Which trains did you actually send on their way when you worked for the German Reichsbahn? What happened in Italy in 1944?” At age 16, Georg demands the truth from his father. Later on, when he finally discovers it, he faces a wall, too. Is his ineptness just a form of indifference, or is he atoning for his father’s wartime actions in the Tuscan village of Sant’Anna di Stazzema? Even in distant Detroit, Georg encounters the past. It influences his private life in a way he never would have anticipated.
