This documentary looks at the life and work of the world-renowned, controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989. It explores his photography, his relationship to the art world of downtown New York, and the gay S&M club scene of the 1980s. His infamously explicit pictures of this gay, leather underground were considered groundbreaking and made him a cause célèbre. His portraits, flowers, erotic subjects, and artistic presentation elevated the photograph to the status of serious art, worthy of exhibition in galleries and museums.
