“First Fridays” Program for November 2013: A compilation of footage of Sumi Ink Club

The Noguchi Museum’s “First Fridays” series of special evening hours (5–8 pm), free admission, art, and film continues on November 1, with a screening of a compilation of footage of Sumi Ink Club, a participatory drawing project established in 2005 by Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. Using traditional sumi-e ink, members of the Club produce work cooperatively in open-to-the-public meetings, several of which are presented here as time-lapse video. In each of its permutations, Sumi Ink Club uses group drawing as a means to document and reinforce social interactions in everyday life.

The footage has been selected to coincide with Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930, a major exhibition exploring the creative exchange between Noguchi and the eminent Chinese ink painter Qi Baishi, on view at the Museum through January 26, 2014.

“First Fridays” also feature “Center of Attention”—a guided discussion of a single work of art on view—and will focus on Isamu Noguchi’s bronze and brass wire sculpture Serpent and Spider Dress from the “Cave of the Heart” series he created for Martha Graham, beginning at 6 pm. A cash bar with wine and beer begins at 5:30 pm, and the film screening begins at 7 pm.
