JOIN US FOR A PASSIONATE DISCUSSION ABOUT DOING MORE OF WHAT YOU ENJOY.
Valentine’s Day traditionally focuses on one particular type of love – expressed in the form of flower bouquets, heart-shaped candy boxes, candlelight dinners, and evening romance.
But life offers all of us the opportunity to experience love and fulfillment in so many more ways than this narrow definition alone.
Tonight, we’ll focus on passion of an entirely different sort – by talking about finding happiness in doing more of what we love.
Let’s chat about the unexpected magic that can happen when we are courageous enough to follow our hearts and devote time to what we most enjoy in life – even when it means turning away from what is far more practical, safe, and familiar.
Before arriving at this event, take a quick look at this nine-minute TED Talk from artist Mun Ng, who describes the path that he followed to pursue his passion, instead of conceding to his father’s more conventional wishes: https://youtu.be/6SBgMI5gTDQ/.
Then come share your own thoughts, insights, and experiences related to this topic, including:
> What do you enjoy doing most? What are your favorite hobbies? How do you prefer to spend your free time?
> Are there hobbies that you used to engage in that you haven’t done for awhile? Are there ways to reintroduce any of these activities back into your life?
> What did you want to be when you were a little kid? What inspired this choice of profession in your young mind? Did you follow through on that original dream – or when did you start to adjust these ideas and envision your future differently?
> If you went to college, what was your major, and what prompted you to choose this subject? Did you end up pursuing employment in this field? If you chose to pursue a different path than college, what motivated your decision to head in this direction? If you had a chance to rewind time, would you make the same choices you did then?
> How did you decide what type of employment to pursue at the start of your career? What were the main factors that mattered to you in looking for a first job?
> What do / did you do for a living? How much do / did you enjoy your “day job”? To what extent does / did your job incorporate your personal interests?
> Did you ever face a point in your career where you had to make an important decision between two very different job tracks, directions, or opportunities? What influenced the choice you made? If you had the opportunity to return to that moment, would you make the same choice?
> A Deloitte study conducted in 2017 found that only 13% of the US workforce is passionate about their jobs. Do you find this statistic surprising? Why do so many people continue to work at jobs they don’t enjoy?
> What are the pros and cons of pursuing your true passion as a vocation? Do the rewards outweigh the risks? What factors need to be considered?
> What do you consider to be your greatest strengths? How have you been able to develop these abilities throughout your life?
> If money were no object, how would you choose to spend your time? How different would your life be, in terms of the types of activities that you regularly engage in?
> Are there any new hobbies that you would like to begin incorporating into your life? What has prevented you from giving them a try before? What’s the easiest way to start engaging in these activities?
> Have you ever had a sense of an “inner calling” – discussed by many speakers and authors, such as Wayne Dyer – seemingly nudging you toward a particular path in life? Have you followed this inner voice? How did it turn out? Do you see yourself as having a specific purpose or mission for this lifetime, or do you think that it’s nothing more than a matter of personal choice at any given time?
> Joseph Campbell famously delivered the following quote: “Follow your bliss, and the universe will open doors for you, where there were only walls.” What does this quotation mean to you? Have you ever had this type of experience, in which unexpected outcomes resulted from doing more of what you love?
We will be joined by members from a number of different Meetup groups for this discussion.
Totally looking forward to seeing all of you!
