Green-Wood Presents “A Gleam in His Eye”

Archigrafika red with cream backgroundJoin Art Presson, Vice-President of Design and Landscape at Green-Wood, for a trolley tour highlighting David Bates Douglass’s master plan for Green-Wood’s landscape. Douglass, an engineer by trade and a veteran of the War of 1812, created the layout for the cemetery in the days before “landscape architects” existed.  His many engineering feats include the Croton Aqueduct, the Gowanus Canal, sections of the Erie Canal, and the rocky supporting wall below the Brooklyn Heights promenade. He also served as Green-Wood’s first president.

Pre-dating Central and Prospect Parks, Green-Wood gave 19th-century Brooklynites and New Yorkers a place to escape from the urban grind. A greenscape ahead of its time, the Cemetery winds its way through rolling hills and glacial ponds with each twist and turn. Presson will lead visitors through Douglass’s creation and discuss how it has evolved after nearly two centuries.

This program is made possible through support from the New York State Council on the Arts.

$20; $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Reservations are recommended. If trolley tour is not sold out, walk-ups will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. To make an online reservation or to find out more information, visit www.green-wood.com/toursevents or call 718-210-3080.
