Green-Wood’s Eleventh Annual Gala Honors the Legacy of Leonard Bernstein

As The Green-Wood Cemetery celebrates the centennial of the birth of “permanent resident” Leonard Bernstein, it will bestow its highest honor – The De Witt Clinton Award for Excellence – on the maestro’s three children Nina, Alexander, and Jamie. The award will be presented at the Cemetery’s eleventh annual fundraising gala taking place on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Green-Wood, a National Historic Landmark located in Brooklyn.

The event, taking place in one of the city’s most historic and storied landscapes, will feature cocktails alfresco followed by a seated dinner and award presentation. Funds raised will support Green-Wood’s programming initiatives, including an Education and Welcome Center that incorporates Green-Wood’s recently restored Weir Greenhouse and a stunning new front landscape that will visually unite the Center with its extensive historic grounds.

For nearly fifty years, Leonard Bernstein was one of the leading figures in the music world. A Tony-award-winning composer, his works bridged Broadway and classical music with his timeless scores for West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide. As both the music director and chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic, he was a widely influential music teacher through his Young People’s Concerts which were televised to millions. Bernstein authored several books about music and was an early champion of the fight against AIDS, raising millions of dollars for research and care. His gravesite is one of Green-Wood’s most visited.

Indelibly imprinted with the energy and musicality of their legendary father and the theatricality and activism of their mother, Felicia Cohn Monteleagre, siblings Jamie Bernstein, Alexander Bernstein, and Nina Bernstein Simmons carry the Bernstein spirit and legacy into the twenty-first century. Their extraordinary achievements and passions range from music education, literature, to social justice.

Attire is business casual and guests should enter at Green-Wood’s main gate at 25th Street and 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. For information about the event, visit http://www.green-wood.com/benefit.
