Since its inception right here in New York, hip-hop has been a vehicle for the voiceless. Hip-Hop and politics go together like slowed-down soul samples and The College Dropout. This workshop will examine this deeply rooted connection and how it has evolved. What does hip-hop mean in the times of #BlackLivesMatter? In what ways do artists, especially those that are more famous, support or complicate this message? In what ways have hip-hop’s political roots been co-opted so that the music could be more consumable by the mainstream? We look for answers using listenings, viewings, readings and discussion.
