In the year 2000, the Italian Parliament established a day of remembrance of the victims of the Shoah. It chose January 27, the day in which, in 1945, the Soviet army liberated the extermination camp of Auschwitz. Most European countries as well as the UN have since adopted the observance of this date. The Consulate General of Italy every year renews its commitment to the duty of memory by promoting a series of events to remember the victims of the Nazi-Fascist persecution, to educate youth on the history of totalitarianism and to raise awareness against racism and xenophobia. The initiative is promoted by the Consulate General of Italy, the Centro Primo Levi, the Italian Cultural Institute; the Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’ at NYU, the John D. Calandra Institute at CUNY, the Italian Academy at Columbia University and the Scuola d’Italia “G. Marconi” also support this initiative.

The ceremony will be held in front of the Consulate General of Italy at 688 Park Avenue between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
