At the Tenement Museum, a day doesn’t go by without a visitor saying, “Immigrants back then were different.” Or maybe it’s the claim that “back then” they were legal, learned English, or worked hard. As we strive to understand all points of view and engage productive conversation, we bring together an expert panel to examine the pervasive myths about immigrants past and present, why and how they have persisted over time, and ways to address them today.
Panelists include:
Tyler Anbinder, historian and author of City of Dreams: The 400-Year Epic History of Immigrant New York
Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum and author of There Goes the Neighborhood
Moustafa Bayoumi, journalist and author of How Does It Feel To Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America
Nancy Foner, sociologist and author of From Ellis Island to JFK
Phil Kasinitz, sociologist and author of Inheriting the City: The Children of Immigrants Come of Age
