Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Eugenides launches his first collection of short fiction, Fresh Complaint, displaying the beautiful writing and acute observation of the crises of adolescence, self-discovery, family love, and what it means to be American that make his bestselling novels so compelling. Packed with a density of ideas despite their fluid grace, the stories range from the reproductive antics of “Baster” to the dreamy, moving account of a young traveler’s search for enlightenment in “Air Mail” (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories), with characters including a failed poet who becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood; and, in the title story “Fresh Complaint,” a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures of her immigrant family lead her to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged British physicist. Eugenides discusses his work with book critic and biographer Ruth Franklin (author of Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life) at this launch event.
Each $30 ticket includes admission to the event, as well as a hardcover copy of Fresh Complaint; books are distributed at the event. JeffreyEugenides will sign and personalize booksfollowing the discussion (up to three books per person).
