Jennifer Egan Presents Manhattan Beach

Pulitzer Prize-winning Brooklyn novelist Jennifer Egan (A Visit from the Goon Squad) presents her new historical novel in the perfect setting at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

In Jennifer Egan’s magnificent novel Manhattan Beach, Anna Kerrigan works at the Brooklyn Naval Yard during World War Two, where women are allowed to hold jobs that once belonged to men, including the dangerous and exclusive job of naval diver that Anna craves. One evening at a nightclub, she meets Dexter Styles, and begins to understand why her father vanished years before. With the atmosphere of a noir thriller, Egan’s novel follows Anna and Dexter into a Brooklyn populated by gangsters, sailors, divers, bankers, and union men. Manhattan Beach is a deft, dazzling, propulsive exploration of a transformative moment in the lives and identities of women and men, of America and the world.

Egan launches her book with a festive event at BLDG 92, a former Marine Commandant’s residence transformed into a public exhibition space highlighting the rich history of the Navy Yard as well as its continuing transformation. The event, which is free and open to the public (RSVP required), features a wine reception and book signing, as guests are free to explore the exhibitions which illuminate the world of Egan’s novel.
