Joel Meyerowitz: Provincetown

In celebration of the forthcoming title Provincetown, Aperture is pleased to present an artist talk and book signing with Joel Meyerowitz.

Throughout the late 1970s and early ’80s, Meyerowitz spent his summers in Provincetown Massachusetts—a safe haven for the queer community and getaway for artists—roaming the seaside with an 8-by-10 camera, making exquisite, sharply observed portraits of families, couples, children, artists, and other denizens of the progressive community. In this work, a cast of characters appears and reappears from season to season against a backdrop of sea, sand, and sun. Provincetown collects one hundred portraits, most never-before published, bringing viewers into an idyllic world of self-styled individualism.

Joel Meyerowitz (born in New York, 1938) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He is a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, a recipient of both National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and a recipient of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis. Meyerowitz has published thirty books. He lives in Italy.

Aperture Foundation’s public programs are supported, in part, by generous donations from our Board of Trustees, our members and other individuals, and from corporate foundations and private foundations including: Grace Jones Richardson Trust, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
