Author Ken Klonsky presents Freeing David McCallum, the incredible true story of a wrongfully convicted man freed and exonerated after serving twenty-nine years in prison. The book relates the saga of how McCallum, the late Rubin “Hurricane” Carter – who himself was wrongfully convicted – and author Klonsky struggled to secure McCallum’s release: founding an innocence project to take on the case, attaining pro bono lawyers, and hiring a private detective to unearth old and new evidence, and the most difficult part: convincing members of a deeply flawed criminal justice system to reopen a case that would expose their own mistakes. Klonsky shares the stage with McCallum himself to discuss the book, McCallum’s life in and out of prison, and the issues of systemic injustice his story illuminates. The discussion is accompanied by clips from the 2014 documentary film “Fight For Justice: David & Me”, created by Ken’s son Ray Klonsky, that helped in part to secure McCallum’s release.
