“To Kill a Mockingbird” Special Screening, in Celebration of “Go Set a Watchman”

Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird follows Scout Finch, 6, and her older brother Jem, who live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley. When Atticus, their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to evils of racism and stereotyping. Fifty-five years after To Kill a Mockingbird was published, Lee’s highly anticipated second novel, Go Set a Watchman, is being published on July 14. Go Set a Watchman features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Returning home to Maycomb to visit her father, Jean Louise Finch—Scout—struggles with issues both personal and political, involving Atticus, society, and the small Alabama town that shaped her.

Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.
