La 72: A Conversation with Migrant Rights Activists in Mexico

On October 16th, join the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility and Human Rights First for a conversation with activists and staff of La 72, Mexico’s largest shelter for migrants. Specifically, we will discuss the situation in Mexico and their work on impunity for crimes committed against migrants. A light reception will follow for continued networking.

Named in remembrance of the 72 migrants who were kidnapped and brutally murdered in 2010 by Los Zetas, Mexico’s most vicious criminal organization, La 72 is Mexico’s largest shelter for migrants. In 2016 alone, it provided food, water, shelter, spiritual guidance, and legal advice to nearly 14,000 people. For their courageous work, Friar Tomás, Executive Director Ramón Marquez, and the staff of La 72 are in the crosshairs of Los Zetas, which has repeatedly threatened to kill them. Unbowed, Friar Tomás and Ramón Marquez persist in championing the human rights of migrants and challenging the Mexican government to end impunity for crimes against the hemisphere’s most vulnerable population.

This event will be moderated by Alexandra Delano, Associate Professor and Chair of Global Studies at The New School.
