Author Deborah E, McDowell shares personal recollections and reads excerpts from her memoir: Leaving Pipe Shop: Memories of Kin. McDowell grew up in the “Pipe Shop” neighborhood of Bessemer, Alabama, the hometown of revered artist Ronald Lockett, the self-taught African-American whose work is the subject of two exhibitions this summer at the American Folk Art Museum.
