Mozart was fully aware that his music, in order to be appreciated, had to accommodate the habits and the tastes of its listeners. In 1782, for instance, he wrote to his father, saying that his most recent concertos contained “passages here and there that only connoisseurs can fully appreciate—yet the common listener will find them satisfying as well, although without knowing why.”
In this lively conversation, three prominent Mozart scholars discuss the interaction between Mozart’s music and its listeners, with a special focus on what we can learn from his singers and his operas, and how improbable moments in his music invite us to listen again.
Admission is free and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is approximately one hour and 30 minutes long.
