Art historian Raffaele Bedarida hosts a multimedia celebration of Italian artist and cultural organizer, Corrado Cagli. Forced to leave Italy due to racial persecution, Cagli redefined his role as public artist and his understanding of identity through the experience of exile. With live music and archival display, follow Cagli’s remarkable life, overcoming racial persecution and exile, becoming a US military artist who immortalized the horrors of Buchenwald, and collaborating with George Balanchine’s carnivalesque New York City Ballet production The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne. The program will feature a multimedia display of Cagli’s 1946-47 paintings and drawings for the scenography and costumes of The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne (New York Public Library for the Performing Arts) and a live execution of passages from Vittorio Rieti’s score, which have not been performed in public since 1948, by Cantori New York (Mark Shapiro, director).
Presented in collaboration with Centro Primo Levi, the Italian Cultural Institute, as part of Carnegie Hall’s city-wide festival “Migrations: The Making of America.”
