Migration: Driver of Global Prosperity

With one in seven people currently on the move internationally or within countries, migration is the “mega-trend” of the 21st century—virtually every country is affected by populations moving across its borders. While global migration can produce trauma-and even tragedy– migration is also known as the world’s oldest ‘poverty reduction strategy’, an indispensable engine for human development and a driver for economic growth. In Asia, for example, a region that is home to more than half of the world’s population, migration supports local economies and has helped to sustain consistent economic growth for more than two decades. Developing countries have mobilized their migrant populations to spur industrial growth, while some wealthier countries have sought to attract highly skilled immigrants as leaders in finance, technology and other sectors. In today’s fragile global economy, the contributions made by migrants to society are being felt more than ever.

Join the Asia Society for a special dialogue on the importance of the world’s migrant population. Director General William Swing of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other distinguished panelists will discuss this critical phenomenon and its impact in the years and decades to come. The talk will be moderated by MSNBC anchor Richard Lui.
