The Naoshima Symbiosis for the Future: Art, Architecture and Nature

For over 20 years, Benesse Art Site Naoshima has created a unique cultural landscape where architecture and art resonate in harmony with the nature of the Seto Inland Sea. Initiated to foster regional revitalization by attempting to realize a community following the motto of “Living Well,” the project addresses issues resulting from the modernization, depopulation and aging of society, while also helping to develop the archipelago’s distinctive culture.

For the first time at a symposium in the U.S., project initiator Soichiro Fukutake will speak about the history of this unprecedented initiative and its underlying philosophy. Three of the architects involved – Pritzker Prize recipients Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa as well as Hiroshi Sambuichi – will be present to showcase their much acclaimed on-site realizations. Their presentations will be preceded by an introduction by curator Akiko Miki and followed by a panel discussion, conducted by Eve Blau, Professor of the History of Urban Form at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, to reflect on the meaning and potential of such projects in the future. Followed by a reception.
