Now and at the Hour of Our Death: The Sorrowful Mother in Italy and Italian-American Communities with Mallorie Vaudoise

The ancient cult of the Great Mother is alive and well in Italy, where devotees honor the Virgin Mary (also know as the Madonna) at sites originally dedicated to pagan goddesses. This talk focuses on the presence of the Sorrowful Mother in art and popular culture, from the Italian peninsula to immigrant communities in the United States. Mallorie Vaudoise will explore how this figure maintains both a privileged status in official Catholic teaching as well as a peculiar power in folk practices.

Mallorie Vaudoise is a NYC-based spiritualist of Italian descent. She is also the author of Italian Folk Magic, a blog about devotional practices from Southern Italy and Sicily.
