Obscura Day 2016: Flux Factory Tour & Scavenger Hunt in LIC

Celebrate Obscura Day in Dutch Kills, one of Long Island City’s best kept secrets, on a scavenger hunt and gallery tour.

Up first: find treasures hiding in plain sight during the Found Art Scavenger Hunt, organized by Lise Brenner, choreographer and Culture Push Fellow in Utopian Practice. Turn off your cell phone, fire up your own internal GPS system and enjoy exercising your instinctual ability to intuit what corner to turn next. Think of yourself as a creative truffle hound, enjoying the sights and sounds of local streets through the lens of an equal opportunity art scavenger. We’ll round up the game at The Flux Factory, one of NYC’s best little known art spaces. After Obscura prizes are awarded, we’ll start the second part of the afternoons’ adventure with an artist-led tour of the 8,000 square foot former greeting card factory, now a gallery and studios. Experimental and collaborative art-making is what has distinguished Flux Factory since it was founded in 1993 and the result is a funky one-of-a-kind hodgepodge of ideas and experiments that hosts a constant flow of young artists from around the world. Learn about the history, organization and current projects of Flux Factory and get a peek into the artistry of Alfred “Cat Postcards” Mainzer, the former occupant of current Flux Factory building.
