Oculus Book Talk: The Man in the Glass House

Join us for our January Oculus Book Talk on The Man in the Glass House: Philip Johnson, Architect of the Modern Century (Little, Brown and Company, 2018) with author Mark Lamster in conversation with writer and critic Karrie Jacobs.

When Philip Johnson died in 2005 at the age of 98, he was still one of the most recognizable—and influential—figures on the American cultural landscape. The first recipient of the Pritzker Prize and MoMA’s founding architectural curator, Johnson made his mark as one of America’s leading architects with his famous Glass House in New Caanan, CT, and his controversial AT&T Building in NYC, among many others in nearly every city in the country—but his most natural role was as a consummate power broker and shaper of public opinion. A rollercoaster tale of the perils of wealth, privilege, and ambition, The Man In The Glass House probes the dynamics of American culture that made him so powerful, and tells the story of the built environment in modern America.

At this event award-winning architectural critic Mark Lamster talks about his new biography of Johnson with journalist Karrie Jacobs, discussing his project to reveal the story of Johnson’s controversial and endlessly contradictory life.

Mark Lamster is the architecture critic of the Dallas Morning News and a professor at the architecture school of the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2017, he was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular contributor to numerous magazines. His photographic work has been published and exhibited across the United States.

Karrie Jacobs is a professional observer of the man-made landscape and writes about it for Architect magazine and Curbed. For a decade, Jacobs was contributing editor at Metropolis magazine where she wrote a monthly column, “America,” about how ideas and strategies in architecture and design play out on the landscape. Jacobs has served as the architecture critic of New York magazine and was the founding editor-in-chief of Dwell magazine. She is a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts’ MA program in Design Research, Writing & Criticism.
