ONLINE | Critical History Today: Stevie Wonder, World Culture, and Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants (1978)

The Historical Studies department is returning with their lecture series—Critical History Today. The themes of which build upon our shared commitment to developing modes of historical analysis that speak to the urgent concerns of the present and that promote rigorous engagement between history and other branches of the humanities and social sciences.

Our series features some of the most innovative voices in historiography today. Join us October 12th for a lecture with Kevin Gaines, the Julian Bond Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice, in the Corcoran Department of History and the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies.

The lecture will discuss Wonder’s storied career as global pop music superstar and his longtime advocacy for human rights. Focusing on his 1978 album, Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants, Gaines will argue that the album deploys artistic ambition and experimentation in defiance of the supposed limitations of racism and disability.
