Pass the Flamingo LIVE: The Cuisine of Ancient Greece

An interactive, snacks-included talk on the history of everyone’s favorite subject: FOOD!

The Ancient Greeks have had a pretty formidable influence on the modern Western world. We’re surrounded by references to their government, art, literature, mythology…but what about their food? After a long day of writing philosophy or besieging Troy, what kind of meal would an Ancient Spartan or Athenian enjoy? Fortunately for us, the Greeks left behind a wealth of information about what and how they ate.

History and food educator Andrew Coletti will take us back to the kitchens and tables of Classical Greece: a rich and varied world of snobby food critics, wine-soaked symposia, and “black stew.” We’ll break down the world’s first health diets, hear the longest recipe name ever written, and sample some recreated ancient delicacies.

Andrew Coletti is an educator who has consumed everything from duck brains to Mesopotamian barley beer. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Classics from Bard College and a Masters in Museum Education from Bank Street College of Education. You can find him teaching classes on ancient food (and sharing some) at the Brooklyn Brainery and around New York City.
