On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan’s devastating surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor propelled the United States into one of the bloodiest wars in history.
The months and years that followed took American troops from the battlefields of North Africa, to the ancient cities of Italy, to the shores of Normandy in a push to liberate Europe from the grasp of fascism.
Join Rick Atkinson as he discusses the sacrifices, shortcomings, and eventual triumph of the American-led coalition of Western allies that fought to defeat Hitler, Mussolini and the Axis powers.
Atkinson is the author of the monumental Liberation Trilogy. The first volume, An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943, received the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. Other volumes in the series include The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944 and The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945.
