Poetry in America is a new series produced by Verse Video Education and presented by WGBH, airing nationally on PBS. Every half-hour episode offers the viewer a fully immersive experience in hearing, reading, and discussing a single American poem by gathering distinguished interpreters from all walks of life to explore and debate unforgettable American works. Athletes, poets, politicians, musicians, architects, scientists, actors, entrepreneurs, and citizens of all ages join together with host and Harvard professor Elisa New to experience and share the power of poetry.
The Sheen Center brings the “Poetry in America” experience live to the stage of the Loreto Theater. Focusing on Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “One Art,” this event will feature a discussion of “the art of losing” through a poem that builds up a small catalog of losses — like keys and a mother’s watch — before climaxing with the loss of houses, land, and a loved one.
Host Elisa New welcomes guests, including singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter, who will sing during the show, and poet Gregory Orr, as they discuss and interpret the poem through their individual filters and lenses, creating a larger worldview for this seemingly simple work of art.
