Private Gallery Tour—The Steins Collect

Rebecca Rabinow, Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art

Gertrude Stein, her brothers Leo and Michael, and Michael’s wife, Sarah, were important patrons of modern art during the first decades of the twentieth century. Their apartments on the rue de Fleurus and rue Madame were filled with hundreds of paintings by their many artist friends, most notably Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. A generation of international artists, collectors, and dealers was introduced to the work of the Parisian avant-garde at the Steins’ legendary Saturday-evening salons. Tour this exhibition of more than two hundred paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by Matisse and Picasso, as well as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, Maurice Denis, Juan Gris, Marie Laurencin, Henri Manguin, André Masson, Elie Nadelman, Francis Picabia, Auguste Renoir, and others.
