“Race and Real Estate: Conflict and Cooperation in Harlem, 1890-1920”
McGruder reveals the complex interactions between whites and African Americans at a critical time of African-American migration. Although some white Harlem residents used racially restrictive real estate practices to block Blacks from buying homes, others believed African Americans had a right to settle in Harlem and facilitated sales. McGruder documents how Harlem in these 30 years changed into a community that became a symbol of the possibilities and challenges Black populations faced in the U.S.
“[A] fact-filled book… enlivened by personal accounts.”
