Republican Friendships: Erskine & Molly Childers and Ernie O’Malley, 1921-1924

Erskine C. Childers, great-grandson of Erskine Childers and Cormac O’Malley, son of Ernie O’Malley, present “Republican Friendships: Erskine and Molly Childers and Ernie O’Malley, 1921-1924.”

Erskine C. Childers and Cormac O’Malley commemorate the 90th anniversary of the capture and execution of Erskine Childers, the capture and imprisonment of Ernie O’Malley, and their friendships set in the wider context of Erskine’s relationship with England, Molly’s relationship with America, and Ernie with Irish independence.

Robert Erskine Childers DSC (1870-1922), universally known as Erskine Childers, was the author of the influential novel The Riddle of the Sandsand an Irish nationalist who smuggled guns to Ireland in his sailing yachtAsgard. He was executed by the authorities of the nascent Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War. He was the son of British Orientalist scholar Robert Caesar Childers; the cousin of Hugh Childers and Robert Barton; and the father of the fourth President of Ireland, Erskine Hamilton Childers. He was married to Molly Childers, who stayed in contact with Ernie O’Malley following her husband’s death. This talk uses the correspondence between Molly and Ernie to explore Molly’s thoughts on America.

Ernie O’Malley (1897-1957) was an Irish Republican Army (IRA) officer during the Irish War of Independence and a commander of the anti-Treaty IRA during the Irish Civil War. O’Malley wrote three books, On Another Man’s Wound, The Singing Flame, and Raids and Rallies. The first describes his early life and role in the War of Independence, while the second covers the Civil War. The literary quality of these books and O’Malley’s career after the political conflicts distinguish him from other IRA men who also penned memoirs of the times.

Introduction by Joe Lee, Glucksman Chair of Irish Studies, Professor of History, and Director of Glucksman Ireland House NYU.
