‘Secret Brooklyn: An Unusual Guide’ at Kingsland Wildflowers
Preview Untapped Cities’ newest book on the borough’s hidden gems… inside one of Brooklyn’s most secret locations, a native wildflower rooftop garden along Newtown Creek.
Every borough has its secrets, and Brooklyn boasts some of the most unusual of them all. Learn about these unusual locations from Michelle Young and Augustin Pasquet of Untapped Cities, amongst one of the most surprising spots of them all–an ecological rooftop green oasis in an oil spill zone!
To celebrate the second edition of the book, Secret Brooklyn: An Unusual Guide by Michelle Young and Augustin Pasquet, releasing in May 2019, we’ll gather in the shadows of the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to learn more about the borough’s mysterious locals and legendary spaces to shed light on these hidden histories.
Attendees will be given the rare opportunity to tour the Kingsland Wildflowers rooftop space and all about the work of local ecologists before taking a seat to explore Brooklyn through Michelle and Augustin’s eyes.
With Michelle and Augustin as your guides, you’ll discover secret museums, go on an urban safari for wild parrots, watch a performance of robots in a church, stand tall next to hobbit doors on an otherwise normal residential street, learn how to breathe fire, swallow swords, hammer a nail into your skull and charm a snake, touch the oldest subway tunnel in the world and the world’s smallest Torah. New locations in the second edition include a hidden tennis club, a house full of superheroes, remnants of a lost hotel and train station, and Kingsland Wildflowers itself!
EVENT DETAILS:
The event will start with a tour of the green roof, which is wheelchair accessible.
Please dress and pack appropriately for the weather. The event will take place both indoors and outdoors.
