A Serious Joke Gallery Show Opening Reception

A SERIOUS JOKE

RUONAN YAN

MARCH 9 – 22, 2017

OPENING RECEPTION: MARCH 10 FRIDAY 6-9PM

MIRANDA KUO GALLERY 136 ELDRIDGE ST NEW YORK, NY 10002

The greatest humor is never straightforward, but straightforward can be funny.

Yan’s huge woodcut prints convey a very subtle unseriousness. The one, and sole object is presented on paper in a deadpan way. Artist chooses, and focuses on odd subjects like peeled orange or cashew, and magni es the unimportance of these objects.

The theme of food is a common first impression people obtain from Yan’s work. However, what’s more accurate is, Ruonan likes to express the ridiculousness that comes from ordinariness, or even rationality.

Ruonan Yan is a visual artist who based in Brooklyn, NY. She was born and raised in China. She received her BFA degree of graphic design in China, 2013, and her MFA degree of drawing from New York Academy of Art in 2016.

Ruonan is influenced significantly by her Asian background. She started doing printmaking since 2015 when she was in New York Academy of Art. The large size food series woodcut prints are her most important pieces. In this series, she plays with abstract shapes, colors, pop art, minimalism and sense of humor. She is excited to combine minimal art with humor/emotion. She is fascinated by the great deal of information that generated out of the very little content in the image. Each print is 50”x50”, all printed by hand. She also explores different printmaking techniques like lithography and monotype.
