Simple by Design: Arts & Crafts Silver and Jewelry

National Identities: Arts & Crafts in Europe and America”

Interesting fact: the Arts & Crafts movement in America was not invented by hipsters in Brooklyn. Born as a radical response to Victorian excess and rampant industrialization, the Arts & Crafts movement prompted a revival of handcraftmanship and an idealistic philosophy of reform in both life and work, a philosophy that is very much alive today. This two-part series will examine the effects of this pioneering movement on the work of silversmiths and jewelers.

As the craft revival spread from Britain to the Continent and overseas to America, national identity and a nostalgia for the pre-industrial past became defining characteristics. From the Jugendstil movement in Germany and Austria’s Wiener Werkstätte to Boston’s Society of Arts and Crafts and Chicago’s Kalo Shop, the celebration of handcraftmanship and reform remained constant.
