The story most often told about modernity is of grand achievement, the triumphant march of reason and moral persuasion from Descartes to today. But that story is wrong because it obscures a grim truth: that modernity was built upon the degradation and colonization of Black people. Africana philosophy celebrates the achievements of thinkers of the African diaspora whose explorations of freedom, justification and redemption challenge the achievements of modernity – and offer powerful lessons for the future.
Join Lewis Gordon, Moor Mother, and host Sam Dresser at Joe’s Pub as we explore, through conversation and music, the development of Africana philosophy: its promises, its challenges, and its powerful lessons.
About Sophia Club
Everyone has a stake in philosophy; its vitality can be drawn out and re-energised through conversation, with each other, and the arts. The Sophia Club creates a space for people to come together, ponder big questions, encounter new perspectives, and appreciate the rich connections between thought, emotions and artistic expression.
We call this space Live Philosophy.
The Sophia Club is the latest venture from Aeon Media, the publisher of Aeon and Psyche magazines. To be the first to hear about our event program, follow the Sophia Club on Instagram @sophiaclub_live or sign up to the newsletter at sophiaclub.co.
