South of Gold Mountain
Following their recent successful NY season, H.T. Chen and Dancers announce two encore performances of their major dance/theater work “South of Gold Mountain.” In 1850, news of the “California Gold Rush” reached southern China, and thus began an exodus of 300,000 Chinese immigrants to the U.S., many settling in southern states, where they helped build the country by working on railroads, levees, and plantations, and as grocers. Created and choreographed by H.T. Chen and Dian Dong, the work is both an immigration and civil rights story. The couple spent three years traveling in the South, drawing their work from rich oral histories, treasured images, and official and private documentation of the first Chinese settlers. H.T. Chen and Dancers will perform, joined by children from the Chen Dance Center school. Performances at Chen Dance Center, 70 Mulberry St (corner of Mulberry & Bayard in Chinatown).
Tickets $15.
When: Fri., May. 13, 2016 - Sat., May. 14, 2016 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
