‘Spanning the City: Under-the-Radar Bridges in New York’ Webinar

Without its bridges, New York City as we know it would not — and could not — exist; after all, they made it possible for the island of Manhattan to be the central nervous system of a vast, interconnected five borough metropolis. But how did these engineering marvels come about, and how exactly did they transform the region? It’s time to uncover the stories behind these looming transporters of cars, trains, and most importantly, water.

Join New York Adventure Club for our Spanning the City series, in which we explore the history of New York City’s bridges, which have each played an enormous role in the history and development of the city and surrounding region. This webinar will focus on the more obscure bridges throughout the five boroughs.

Led by writer, historian, and New York City tour guide Lucie Levine, our virtual experience surrounding a large selection of under-the-radar bridges throughout New York will include:

  • The social and cultural history of the bridges, including one that helped establish a Native American community of ironworkers in Brooklyn
  • Why a variety of different types of engineering methods were used to construct the bridges
  • A pedestrian bridge that began as a wooden drawbridge in 1897
  • Where in Brooklyn to find the oldest “retractile-type” bridge in the country
  • How a bridge across the Harlem River helped transform New York’s health and hygiene

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Lucie — any and all questions about the under-the-radar bridges of NYC are welcomed and encouraged!
