A Talk With the Critics at the New York Academy of Art

New York Academy of Art Senior Critic Sharon Louden moderates a conversation between art critics Ben Davis, Carol Kino, Andrew Russeth and Benjamin Sutton.

Ben Davis is an art critic living and working in New York City. He is currently National Art Critic for Artnet News and critic-in-residence at Montclair State University. He was formerly executive editor of Artinfo.comand one of the editors of The Elements of Architecture, the catalogue for the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. His writings have appeared in Adbusters, The Brooklyn Rail, Frieze, Slate.com, The Village Voice and many other venues. He is the author of 9.5 Theses on Art and Class (Haymarket, 2013), which was nominated for Best Work of Criticism by the International Association of Art Critics, declared one of the Books of the Year (2013) by Verso and mentioned by Frieze.com, The Progressive, The Village Voice and several other publications. Reviewing the book, The Stranger wrote, “We should hold town halls on this book.”

Benjamin Sutton is an art critic, journalist and curator based in Brooklyn. He is the Metro Editor at Hyperallergic. His articles on the migrations of New York City artists and galleries, art heists, the use of drones in art and other divisive issues have been published there and by other outlets including Artnet, The L Magazine, Modern Painters, Art & Auction and Brooklyn Magazine. He has curated exhibitions at Field Projects, the Spring Break Art Show, the Gowanus Loft and the Lower East Side Printshop.

Andrew Russeth is co-executive editor of ARTnews magazine. He was previously a senior editor at the New York Observer, where he helped launch the paper’s Gallerist website which focused on the New York art world. His writing has appeared in W, Modern Painters, Paper Monument’s website and catalogues for the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem. His blog about contemporary art, 16 Miles of String, has received support from the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program.

Carol Kino is an art journalist and critic at the The New York Times, WSJ Magazine, T Magazine and 1stdibs Introspective. Her stories about art have also appeared in a wide range of publications, including Departures, The National (Abu Dhabi), Slate, The Atlantic Monthly, Art & Antiques, Art in America, Conde Nast Portfolio, Town & Country, Vogue, Modern Painters and many more. She has also been a two-time USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow (2007 and 2011).
