Talk: Exploring Rodin’s Influence

This panel brings together leading art historians and critics to explore three artists in Auguste Rodin’s sphere of influence—sculptors Camille Claudel and Meta Warrick Fuller and writer Rainer Maria Rilke—and discuss how Rodin’s practice and formal innovations were interpreted by a younger generation of artists and writers. Following short presentations, Lisa Small, Senior Curator of European Art and curator of Rodin at the Brooklyn Museum: The Body in Bronze, moderates a conversation.

Panel:

  • Renée Ater, Associate Professor Emerita, American Art, University of Maryland, and author of Remaking Race and History: The Sculpture of Meta Warrick Fuller, discusses Rodin’s stylistic influence on Fuller’s conception of three-dimensional form.
  • Jane R. Becker, Collections Management Associate, Metropolitan Museum of Art, examines artist Camille Claudel’s inventive and empathic representations of the human body, and their relationship both to Rodin’s artworks and to the two sculptors’ tumultuous affair.
  • Rachel Corbett, journalist and author of You Must Change Your Life: The Story of Rainer Maria Rilke and Auguste Rodin, gives an intimate look at Rilke’s time working with Rodin, while writing a monograph on the sculptor and later as his secretary.

The program features a special opening performance of Andy Akiho’s Three Shades, Foreshadows, with cellist Mariel Roberts.
