‘The Historic Hotels of New York’s Upper East Side’ Webinar

While New York City’s hotels of the modern era are geared for domestic and international visitors, that wasn’t always the case. Hotels built in the 19th and 20th centuries were originally erected as permanent residences for the richest New Yorkers, who were looking to downsize from their palatial mansions on Fifth Avenue into ‘apartment hotels’ filled with top-of-the-line accommodations. It’s time to explore the luxurious and sumptuous hotels east of Central Park that welcomed the highest echelon of visitors, along with a fair share of drama and debauchery.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the grand hotels of New York’s Upper East Side that redefined luxury in the city, pivoting Gotham from Gilded Age mansions of the 19th century to glittering skyscrapers of the 20th century.

Led by writer, historian, and New York City tour guide Lucie Levine, our virtual experience surrounding the historic hotels of the Upper East Side will include:

  • An architectural and historical look at each featured hotel, including The Plaza, Savoy Plaza (demolished), The Pierre, The Sherry Netherland, and Carlyle
  • Incredible stories from inside the glittering hotels, from a princess who kept a lion cub in her bath tub to which one was the target of the largest jewel heist in American history
  • A discussion around some of the hotels’ most famous guests and staff, including an author who threw “the party of the century,” a hotelier turned spy who became the nation’s oldest combat paratrooper, to an artist who traded his murals for an 18-month hotel stay
  • How these hotels transitioned from mostly permanent residences for wealthy New Yorkers to destinations for the international elite

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Lucie — any and all questions about the historic hotels of the Upper East Side are welcomed and encouraged!
