‘The History of Horse Racing Around The Big Apple’ Webinar

Since horse racing arrived in New York in 1665 as the first organized sport in the colonies, the “Sport of Kings” has been enjoyed by New Yorkers from all walks of life, through good times and bad. But how did a sport — whose players were not even human — make such an impact for centuries to come? This is the story of how speedy horses shaped a fast-moving Gotham, and left an incredible legacy in their wake.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the history of horse racing in and around New York City, and the role it played in the development of the sport, neighborhoods, and civic identity.

Led by Christina Hansen — horsewoman, historian, and carriage driver in Central Park — our unique look at New York City’s horse racing history will include:

  • The “Race of the Century,” which pitted North against South
  • The many lost race tracks of the Gilded Age, and the famous figures who attended
  • The history of the Belmont Stakes, from its origins in the Bronx to the development of the Triple Crown
  • How New York City almost lost horse racing forever
  • The connection between New York City’s storied horse racing past and the city’s nickname, The Big Apple

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Christina — any and all questions about horses in NYC are welcomed and encouraged!
