The Portrait Medal and Its Place in Italian Renaissance Culture,” led by Stephen K. Scher, art historian

The portrait medal, an art form virtually invented during the early Italian Renaissance, encapsulates the most essential values and interests of that period. In one small object the aspirations, accomplishments, interests, and experiences of an individual were displayed and preserved for posterity. This seminar will explore the genesis of the portrait medal in relation to other developments of Italian Renaissance art, including the activities of collectors of the period. Participants will have the opportunity to examine medals by such artists as Pisanello, Antico, Sperandio, Niccolò Fiorentino, and Matteo de’ Pasti.
