The Post-Impressionists, who came of age in the 1870s and 1880s, rejected Impressionism’s aesthetic of the fleeting moment. From the scientific approach of Georges Seurat and his fellow Neo-Impressionists to Paul Cézanne’s quest for “something solid and durable” and Vincent van Gogh’s subjective vision of nature, the work of these artists signaled new directions in art and laid the foundation for the radical innovations that emerged soon after 1900.
