The Right to the City vs. The Might of the Car

Join TransitCenter for a conversation with professors Kafui Attoh and Greg Shill about the barriers to navigating our cities without a car.

How does the might of the car impinge on one’s right to the city? Join TransitCenter for a conversation with professors Kafui Attoh and Greg Shill about the political and legal barriers to freely navigating our cities without a car.

In his book Rights in Transit, Attoh draws from struggles over bus service cuts in Oakland to illustrate how the absence of a “right in transit” violates the democratic promise of access to civic life. In a complementary vein, Shill’s work explores how the American legal system privileges driving implicitly and explicitly across nearly every facet of law, with serious consequences for society and the environment.

Expect a lively discussion about the obstacles to car-free transportation and how to better assert the right to freedom of movement in cities.

Panelists:

Kafui Attoh, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies, CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies

Gregory Shill, Assistant Professor, University of Iowa College of Law

Moderator:

Hayley Richardson, Senior Communications Associate, TransitCenter

Light refreshments to be served.

Event is free and open to the public. An RSVP does not guarantee a seat.
