The Story of Acclaimed Blacksmith Samuel Yellin and The Restoration of The Bell Tower Weathervane of the Eagles Nest/Vanderbilt Estate

The Story of Acclaimed Blacksmith Samuel Yellin and The Restoration of The Bell Tower Weathervane of the Eagles Nest/Vanderbilt Estate with artisans Rachel and Timothy Miller, Co-Owners, Spirit Ironworks, Tuesday June 11th at 6.30pm

Timothy and Rachel Miller from Spirit Ironworks had the honor of restoring one of Samuel Yellin’s works of art at The Vanderbilt Museum on Long Island. This was a 15ft high weathervane with a spinning pirate ship that sits on top of a globe decorated with stars. The weathervane held a place of honor on top of a 60 foot Bell Tower at William K. Vanderbilt II’s Long Island estate Eagles Nest but was removed sometime in the early 90’s for restoration. The creator Samuel Yellin was one of the most prolific blacksmiths of his time. His work adorned many notable public buildings and lavish estates in the early 20th century. One such estate is Eagles Nest.  Spirit Ironworks will discuss the restoration, the issues that came up along the way, and describe some of the challenges of restoring historic metalwork
