The Great Lakes may seem far to New Yorkers, but they’re actually just a canal away! The SciFri Book Club is gathering a crew for some deep water explorations with our 2020 winter book read, The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan.

Get ready to submerge into our favorite underground speakeasy, Caveat in New York City. Hear from experts at Riverkeeper and Billion Oyster Project, two local non-profit organizations that are advocating for better protection and restoration of NYC area waterways. Plus, we’ll chat with Roni Barak Ventura from Porfiri Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering about her work in the Gowanus Canal and other waterways—which sometimes involves a robotic fish, that may make an on-stage appearance! You’ll also get to test your native species trivia knowledge, and find out ways you can get involved in conservation efforts.

We will also be joined by The Death and Life of the Great Lakes author Dan Egan to talk about what it was like to write about the issues plaguing the waters of the five lakes, and the hope held for their future health—as well as people connected to the lakes, literally and figuratively.

Caveat is mixed seating and standing-room. Arrive early to get a good seat!
